Rosatom to Assess the Impact of Radiation Treatment on Shelf Life of Grain and Dried Fruits

 The Rusatom Healthcare joint-stock company, a part of the Rosatom State Corporation, has begun filing applications for research to assess the impact of radiation treatment on extending the shelf life of food and agricultural products, according to the information published on the government procurement website.

 Citing the page, as part of the research, it will be necessary to do an experiment. Experimental batches of wheat and barley, flour, potatoes, onions, garlic, dried fruits (such as raisins, dried apricots and prunes) and nuts should be infected with the most common insect pests. These samples should be irradiated and then assessed how this treatment will affect them – whether it will extend the shelf life of the product and make it safer.

 The research work must be completed no later than April 30, 2020. The maximum contract amount is 15 million rubles.

 The company plans to use the results of the study in the developing of interstate standards of the EAEU on the conditions for the use of ionizing radiation for processing agricultural products and in preparing proposals for changes that need to be made to the EAEU technical regulations.

 JSC Rusatom Healthcare is a subsidiary of the state corporation Rosatom, established to produce equipment and radionuclide products for nuclear medicine and medical imaging as well as industrial equipment based on radiation technologies.
